The Coaching Process–An Overview

An individual commits to working with a coach in order to accelerate growth and movement toward the achievement of professional and/or personal goals. The objective of the coach/client relationship is to accomplish these things in such a way that the client also achieves more fulfillment and balance in life. Coaching is a holistic process that draws upon the whole human being.

Early steps in the coaching process address three areas that are pivotal in the process of accelerating growth: the client’s Key Values, Unique Life Purpose, and Vision of the Future Self.

As the coach and client work on the client’s primary focus areas, the client’s learning is deepened and his or her desired action is forwarded in a variety of ways. One way is by the increasing use of the client’s Key Values, Life Purpose and Future Self Vision as the basis for life decisions and choices. Navigating life in this way leads to the gradual alignment of the client’s internal resources, and releases energy for change and growth. Most clients discover that this is an exhilarating and challenging process; they discover that they have been making many of their choices and decisions without regard to these three key navigation points.

As work continues on the original and newly arising primary focus areas, skill and commitment increase in making life choices on the basis of Key Values, Life Purpose and Future Self Vision. These three points become consistent navigational stars. The result is increased alignment. Alignment is the source of authenticity and the emergence of the client’s true self. The true self is the source of fulfillment.

Individual & Relationship Coaching Assessment Tools

In our individual and relationship coaching processes we sometimes use a variety of 360º assessment tools as well as the following:

EQ-i: Emotional Quotient Inventory

Description: As opposed to measuring IQ, which involves cognitive abilities (e.g. memory, reasoning, recall, symbolic thinking, and visual motor performance), this instrument measures Emotional Intelligence. EQ-i is the first and most highly validated scientific instrument to evaluate an individual’s functional emotional and social strengths and weaknesses. It measures an array of non-cognitive capabilities that determine one’s emotional and social competence and influence one’s ability to succeed in life. Since all these capabilities can change and be improved, the EQ-i also provides guidance in improving Emotional Intelligence.

Applications: Provides information that can be useful in personal and professional development applications such as leadership development, career management, coaching, performance management, talent management, team-building, self development, change management, merger integration, restructuring and realignment, recruiting and retaining high performers, managing diversity, stress management and predicting performance.

KAI: Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory

Description: Measures differences in thinking style in individuals, relating particularly to preferred style of creativity, problem solving and decision-making. The overall score places the respondent on a continuum ranging from highly adaptive to highly innovative.

Applications: Generating better self-understanding; generating better understanding of others; learning to value diversity; understanding creativity and problem solving style differences; improving team member relationships; understanding how to design teams for success; improving continuous improvement and innovation efforts; improving communication skills in work, marriage and parenting; understanding the style demands of specific jobs; preventing job mismatch and enhancing job satisfaction.

MBTI: Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Description: Measures respondents’ preferences on four scales: 1) Extraversion-Introversion; 2) Sensing-Intuition; 3) Thinking-Feeling; and 4) Judging-Perceiving. The various combinations of these preferences result in 16 different personality types.

Applications: Generating better self-understanding; generating better understanding of others; learning to value diversity; improving team member relationships; improving communication skills in work, marriage and parenting; conflict resolution; leadership development; career guidance, understanding the style demands of specific jobs; increasing productivity; preventing job mismatch and enhancing job satisfaction.

CISS: Campbell Interest and Skill Survey

Description: A contemporary survey measuring self-reported interests and skills. The interest scale reflects the individual’s degree of attraction for specific occupational areas. The CISS also adds a skill scale that gives an estimate of the individual’s confidence in his or her ability to perform various occupational activities. Respondents learn how their likes, dislikes, and self-reported skills compare to those of individuals who are happily and successfully employed in occupations that require a post-secondary education.

Applications: Most appropriate for use with individuals who have completed college, are currently in college, or plan to attend. It can be useful in: providing information to assist with career exploration and career development; helping individuals find occupations that help meet their needs; assisting employees who have been displaced by organizational restructuring and are faced with a job transition.

SSBA: Selling Skills Benchmark Assessment

Description: This assessment instrument measures both the knowledge and application skill of respondents in six key categories of critical selling skills that determine a sales person’s success.

Applications: The initial administration of this assessment serves as a benchmark against which later administrations can be compared to measure the respondent’s progress in the context of sales training, sales coaching, and sales skill application growth cycles.
